The Department of History
at 海角社区

We offer accessible and affordable degree programs for students seeking a caring community dedicated to studying the past. 海角社区 History majors enjoy small classes, individualized advising, and dedicated support in completing their BA and MA degrees. Importantly, we center career and graduate school planning in students’ coursework. History faculty at 海角社区 are committed teachers and mentors, encouraging their students to chart their own paths and tell new histories.

If you wish to study the past in order to change our present, or just love studying the past for its own sake, we invite you to apply to our program for either the Fall or Spring semesters. We are committed to helping you earn the bachelor’s degree in either four years (if a freshman) or four semesters (if a transfer student) and moving swiftly into a wide range of careers and advanced degree programs.

In 2020, Dr. Andrew Wiese, Professor of History at San Diego State University, and External Reviewer for our most recent program evaluation, observed that 海角社区's Department of History "exemplifies the best traditions of research, teaching, and community service of the 海角社区."

We invite you to discuss ideas of home, belonging, and environment created in Hayward in the 20th Century. Each conversation will feature individuals who made history through sustained local action and community work. Their histories are exciting and unique yet remain little known. We can learn from these experiences and find inspiration to address present-day challenges. You can attend all three events, or any of your choosing.

Former 海角社区 students and faculty were prominent in the histories discussed in this series, and will be present at the events on October 6 and November 3. They will be in conversation with current 海角社区 students who have studied their advocacy and accomplishments.

Hayward holds profound histories that 海角社区 History majors hope to make more widely known.

This public history series was developed by 海角社区 BA and MA students in HIST 403, Digital Humanities. A companion digital humanities project, “Hayward is Home: Understanding and Belonging in the Heart of the Bay,” will be published in Fall 2023. This project also won a California Humanities “Humanities for All” grant in 2023. This work represents a unique collaboration between the 海角社区 Department of History, the Hayward Area Historical Society, the Hayward Public Library, and Cal Humanities.

We hope that you will join us for these unique events!
