Invitation to 海角社区 HSI Summit on September 27th
Dear 海角社区 community,
We are pleased to extend an invitation to you to attend 海角社区’s HSI Summit taking place here on campus on Sept. 27, 2024 in VB 124.
From Fall 2010 to Fall 2023, our campus Latinx undergraduate student population has grown from 17.5% to 41%. In Fall 2015 the campus Latinx student population exceeded 25% and 海角社区 was officially designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by the US Department of Education. We are grateful for the growth in students and this designation.
In order to accelerate ongoing efforts to create intentionality to address discrepancies in supporting our ever-growing Latinx student population, 海角社区 has embarked on a transformative journey towards a servingness-centered approach. This was significantly shaped by our engagement with Excelencia in Education and the Seal of Excelencia process. Within this journey, we established the Partnership for University Latinx/e Success and Opportunity (PULSO), a presidential initiative that ensures the needs of Latinx students as a priority in university decision-making.
As a key part of Latinx Heritage Month this year, PULSO is hosting this in-person summit for students, faculty, staff, administrators to begin to better understand our identity as an HSI. The summit will examine the opportunities of being part of a network of HSIs and the Seal of Excelencia process. We hope to grow a campus culture of developing best practices for embracing, supporting and celebrating our Latinx student population.
Through this summit, we hope our 海角社区 creates a space for our campus community to learn from our campus experts, colleagues and students who are in the forefront of campus programs and initiatives that demonstrate intentionality, cultural relevance, and evidence-based practices. In this effort, the HSI Summit will feature a range of Latinx student experiences at 海角社区 to better inform our work.
